Safe Pain Relief for Your Dog

Just as in human medicine, many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) have been developed for use in veterinary medicine. These medications allow us to dramatically decrease pain and inflammation in our patient s. The medications have been of great value for many of our older, arthritic patients, and have also been very valuable in relieving pain and inflammation associated with traumatic injuries and surgery. The medications are licensed for use in dogs only. The four medications currently available are Rimadyl (carprofen), EtoGesic (etodolac), Metacam (meloxicam), and Deramaxx (deracoxib).

All of the medications have the potential to create intestinal upset, liver damage, or kidney damage. To avoid potential problems, all dogs receiving these medications on a regular basis must be monitored closely. We require regular blood tests and advise discontinuing use of the medication if any sign of intestinal upset occurs.

All of the medications have an equal ability to relieve pain and inflammation. Despite claims by some marketing promotions, statistical data reveals that none of the medications are superior to the others or safer to use. Some individuals may respond better to one medication than another, and a trial on a variety of the medications may be appropriate if lack of beneficial response occurs, or undesirable side effects occur.

Rimadyl has been on the market for the longest time, and has been used on the largest population of dogs. Reports of dogs becoming ill while taking Rimadyl are common when searching the Internet or talking to people familiar with dogs. Statistically, however, Rimadyl does not create any greater percent of side effects than the other medications; Rimadyl has simply been used the most extensively, and so reports of side effects are more common.

Many sensationalized “stories” have made some pet owners reluctant to administer NSAIDS to their dogs. When the factual data is scrutinized, and proper monitoring of the patient is performed, the medications can be used safely and be of great benefit to our pets. Please talk to any of our veterinarians or staff if you have any questions about using NSAIDS for your pet.
